Uncanny Valley

Funny thing. I always argue why realistic looking CG characters just can't envoke an emotional response from a viewer yet I'm modeling a realistic looking head. I also think puppets still beat CG hands down...no matter how technically advanced we get. Anyways no need for me to argue my point because of course somebody already thought of it before me. I really just like the graph as it explains my fear of zombies and stuffed animals scientifically.

Crunch Time

So why does this work? I've been struggling to get my displacement maps to work in Maya all week long. For some reason they show up here and I don't know why. After several failed attempts and also restarting from scratch I got frustrated and actually hit a bunch of random input nodes when creating the shader....the result was that actually worked. (the lesson here is that if something doesn't work just kick it). All my attempts to recreate the same shader have failed, even when applying it to the same file. I think it is time to stop trying to figure it out and just accept my little miracle for what it is. Time to move on and texture. 2 weeks left. No more time to be picky. I can pick apart everything I make till the cows come home but I'm hoping others wont be so hard on me. It's only my first model...I can do better next time.

This was made with a demo maya plug-in. The clouds and water animation is based on fractals. I still need to figure out how to slow it down. Fractal clouds never look real. Oh look how I procrastinate. Ok...that was somewhat of a quick break. Back to U.V. Texture Mapping for me!

After Effects is just too much fun! I can barely contain my glee as I play around with this program. It's easy and fun! That's a good combo! My brain can't get over the endless amount of creative possibilies this program allows. These projects I did at the beginning of summer. I will try to compress some of my newer stuff soon but I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

adjustments

Still making adjustments to the head...although probably not all that noticeable. I adjusted the mouth and a few other proportions of the chin and head. Also added some veins and wrinkles...which probably can't be seen at this angle. 5 people so far have said that this image looks exactly like someone they know. I wonder if it is the same person they all know or if this is like the universal head? Anyways...on to alpha brushes I think...unless people want to tell me what looks wrong. I don't mind constructive criticism.

DVD menu

I'm trying to keep the design style as consistant as possible...hence why there will probably be a variation of this on a business card and other material. I'm also updating the dvd cover to have the white font as well just below the circle..seems to look better on the DVD menu though. The idea is to animate this in After Effects and bring it into Encore. I think the top pic will have transitions of different closeups from my portfolio. Trying to think about adding some music which doesn't apply to my actual demo reel but will if I want to impress friends and family....I'm thinking some Battlestar Galactica type drums would be nice. Dark, subtle, exotic yet high impact. I don't want to look too evil here.

House that is going to be a 3D element in a matte painting. I'm going to texture it and make it look weathered and shabby. Maybe one day when I am old I will live there...I will be the eccentric old lady with 100 cats who stares at you from behind the curtains.

So these are what I've been working on in zbrush and Maya. Still working on it. Need to add some alpha textures and whatnot. I can't believe how lazy I have been this year. I haven't had any interest in anything I've learned until recently. Everything I thought was impossible only turned out to be heavily time consuming. Something which I wanted to avoid. Why can't anything just be quick and easy? I thought computers were supposed to do amazing things...apparently I have been mislead because I keep having to do all this extra work so that the computer does what I want it to. I'd take a pencil over this any day.
